SalmanAhmad

SalmanAhmad

With 30 million record sales under his belt, and with fans including Bono (U2), Al-Gore, Pakistani Born Salman Ahmad is renowned for being the first Rock & Roll star to destroy the wall that divides the West and the Muslim world. Facing down angry mullahs and oppressive dictators who wanted all music to be banned for The Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Salman Ahmad rocketed to the top music charts, brining western style rock and pop to Pakistani teenagers for the first time. His band Junoon became the U2 of South Asia, A Sufi-Rock group that broke boundaries and sold a record number of albums. But Salman’s Story began in New York, Where he spent his teen years learning to play guitar, listening to Led Zeppelin, hanging out at rock clubs and Beatle Fests, making American friends and Salman was forced to follow the strictures of a newly religious and stratified society . he finished medical school, met his soul mate, and watched his beloved funkytown of Lahore transform with the rest of Pakistan under the rule of Zia into a fundamentalist dictatorship: morality police arrested couples holding hands in public, Little house on the Prairie and Live Aid were banned from television broadcasts, and Kalashnikovs and rocket launchers proliferated on college campuses via the Afghani resistance to Soviet occupation in the north Undettered, the teenage Salman created his own underground jihad: his mission to bring his beloved rock music to an enthusiastic new audience in South Asia and beyond. He started a traveling guitar club that met in private Lahore spaces, mixing Urdu love poems with Casio synthesizers, Tablas with Fender Stratocasters, and ragas with power chords, eventually joining his first pop band, Vital Signs. Later he founded Junoon, South Asia's Biggest rock band, which was followed to every corner of the world by a loyal region of fans called Junoonis. As his music climbed the charts, Salman found himself the target of religious fanatics and power-mad politicians desperate to take him and his band down. But in the center of a new generation of young pakistanis who go to mosques as well as mcdonalds whose religion gives them the compassion for and not fear of the West, and who see modern music as a rainbow bridge that links their lives to the rest of the world nothing could stop Salman's star from rising Today, Salman continues to play music and is also a U.N. Goodwill Embassador, traveling the world as a spokesperson and using the lessons he learned as a musical pioneer to help heal the wounds between East and West.

Faiza Mujahid

Faiza Mujahid

Releasing across all networks on the 9th of May 2011, “Meri Zindagi” marks Faiza Mujahid’s return to the music industry and sees the musician in a new avatar, with an anthem looking to inspire the new generation of urban girls and women in Pakistan. Indeed Faiza Mujahid’s debut release was what came to be a major music release and hit, “Bandeya Ho” composed and sung with musician Khawar Jawad for Shoaib Mansoor’s hugely acclaimed film, “Khuda Ke Liye” in 2006/2007 for which she also lent her vocals for the songs “Mahi Ve” and “Khuda Ke Liya (OST)”. The song’s success led her to perform at a very young age at a series of sold out concerts at cafes, stadiums, theatre venues and clubs. Although Faiza released her second song, “Kahan Houn Main” in 2008 to much acclaim [The song was featured in one of the episodes of the popular Indian TV show “MTV Roadies”], she took a hiatus from songwriting to become radio programming producer at Radio 1 FM 91 in 2009 till early 2011 While at the station, Faiza was an integral part of their Pakistani music programming and also spearheaded the enterprising Celebrity Camp, a concert for the flood affectees arranged by her radio station at which she also performed. This year, the young musician Faiza returns to launch her solo single “Meri Zindagi” which is perhaps a coming-of-age song for Faiza and somewhat introspectively, talks of a vision for women being more independent and in decision making control of their lives; a vision driven from the musicians’ own personal experiences and journey of young rebellion, having constantly clashed with tradition and expectations, carving out a path for herself. In addition to ”Meri Zindagi”, Faiza will also be heard on the soundtrack of Shoaib Mansoor’s next feature film, the much anticipated Bol, alongside Atif Aslam and Hadiqa Kiyani for their collaborative song “Hona Tha Pyar”. She also recently performed a cover of the 1992 Cricket World Cup anthem “The World is Coming Down” along with Junaid Khan of Call The Band, for a joint project by Mvergence and Radio1FM 91.

RaahiTheBand

Raahi

Raahi started out as informal jams and recording sessions of four established artists from the Pakistani music industry. Louis J Pinto (Gumby) was working on sessions with Ahsan Bari and Sameer Ahmed Bakhtiari, and the resulting music seemed to click. Gumby asked OmranShafique to come on board soon after and work on more songs began in earnest. All of them have been composing, recording, and performing with a multitude of artists and projects in different capacities over the years. They decided to take their combined expertise and know how and release their own music under their own banner. The idea behind the band is to keep putting out content and playing shows, without getting bogged down with the production process.. Ideas are promptly recorded by the guys, and they move on to the next song.

HoMannJahaan

Ho Mann Jahaan

Ho Mann Jahaan is a coming of age story set in present day Karachi. It revolves around three main characters – Arhan, Manizeh and Nadir and their friendship born out of shared experiences at the same college and a passionate love for music. The three of them are in fact very talented musicians and aspire to fame. The film is also a reflection of the current dichotomy that exists in our society. We talk of free will but readily accept conformity. Parents impose restrictions and dictate terms, because they love them but at times don't understand them. This is a film of many layers, connecting to both young people and an older generation.

His career stretches back to early 2000’s when rock music was something that was yet to be explored in Pakistan. Though his band Call started in the mid 1990’s with his own brothers, it is when EP was formed between 1999-2000 that gave Xulfi his fame nationally. Xulfi was acclaimed internationally for his soulful voice behind the song titled 'Laree Choote' with which is also his debut in Bollywood for the film 'Ek Chalis Ki Last Local' in 2007, followed by Bollywood film Aasma, Dhadke Jiya for the Bollywood film Aalo Chaat and three more tracks for Aao Wish Karein in 2009. Xulfi is currently working on the background score and feature film music for “Yalghaar”, Pakistan’s biggest movie production yet, to be released in early 2016. OmerInayat

Omer Inayat Productions

After an amazing album that certainly illustrated that Pakistan's music industry has great potential both at a domestic and international level, Omer Inayat returns home with another hit. The Islamabad based musician, who shot to stardom after his first single 'You've Got Something' is now coming out with another album. Losing no time at all Omer Inayat is featured in exceptionally well directed video by Nasir Siddique, the visual play-back of Waali, already riding high on the air waves, clearly illustrates Omer's maturity and dedication to his work. The music has been once again directed by Ali Mustafa, who has done a wonderful job complimenting the composition. Debuting in a unique and certainly set apart video, Omer Inayat's Tenu Le propelled itself to an admirable level, placing him at par with the many distinguished names of Pakistan's pop industry. Many a times innumerable talents have been subdued after an initial taste of success, but we witnessed Omer making his way, learning and implementing. After a year of complete arduousness and a successful album, whose appealing track list gave us modern gems like 'Yuhein' and 'Kya ye Pyar Hai', Omer Inayat was out of the spot light, for a while. During his absence we did hear a familiar tune, this time from across the border, in an Indian film called 'Jai Veeru'. Released last year the film was directed by Punit Sira known for 'Proud to be an Indian' and 'Kissan' casting names like Sohail Khan, Arbaaz Khan, Dia Mirza, Kunal Khemu and Fardeen Khan. Not surprising at all the song was loved by every one and played over and over in clubs. Notwithstanding the fame and recognition Omer Inayat received he now returns with even greater a zest. His work today shows a grown maturity and a nourished talent. His on screen casual and laid back attitude conceals behind itself a fierce temerity, an ambition hungry to fill all that it strives for within itself. And as for the future the way the tide is rolling, I'm betting there's a lot more of Omer Inayat for the future.

Zeb and Haniya

Zeb and Haniya

Zeb and Haniya’s music speaks to a shared base of human experience while evoking the rich and textured soundscapes of West Asia. Cutting edge and commercially successful, the musicians write their own songs and also rework existing melodies of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India. In doing so, Zeb and Haniya carve a space for music that transcends national boundaries. The duo’s debut album, Chup (Hush) broke to glowing reviews in Pakistan: Herald credited Zeb and Haniya with creating an entirely new cannon of jazz-influenced numbers and blues in Urdu, and The News called their arrival “a landmark event.” All songs in the album, with the exception of Paimana Bitte—-an Afghani composition from the 1970s—-were written by Haniya and Zeb themselves. Consequently, the singer-songwriter duo has been described by Deutsche Welles as “among the most innovative musicians in Pakistan.” Across the border, India Today writes that “everything about their music reads as extraordinary.”
